History
American River Resort sits at the heart of local history. In 1848 gold was discovered a few hundred yards downstream, igniting the biggest gold rush in history and changing our nation’s course.
ARR’s history began in the early 1970s by daughter of George Burns and Gracie Allen, Sandra Luckman. The original structures still exist, and ARR has preserved their architectural and visual style. ARR’s current owners, long-time residents of the area, are avid whitewater rafters. The resort’s original name? Camp Coloma.
The American River
What sets American River Resort apart is its unique relationship to The American River and to the American River Canyon with its scenic locales and history. Conservation programs have kept the river pristine, preserving its “wildness” as California’s favorite whitewater river. Camping here lets you interact with the raw beauty and power of a major western river environment.
